An elderly couple was attacked in their home in Fairy Glen on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 14:30 when two suspects tried to rob them.

“One of the suspects climbed over wall to get onto our property,” the husband related. “He then grabbed my wife who was busy watering the garden at the time. He held a knife to her throat and took her into the house.”

He was inside at the time. “The suspect, whom we know, then put a knife to my throat and told me to open the front gate for the other suspect waiting outside. I told him I wasn’t going to open the gate and he threatened to stab me.”

Just then the couple had a visitor, who interrupted the suspect. “While the suspect was holding me down on the couch my wife somehow managed to get away and run to the tenants we share the property with, and at the same time our visitor came to the lounge. The suspect saw him and also spotted the keys on a counter, which he grabbed and ran away.”

The elderly man in his 70s explained that during the ordeal he recognised the knife- and panga-wielding assailant as a man who did gardening work for him and his wife.

“About 18 months ago he did some gardening for us. Then we heard he was in jail for theft. And now I think he is homeless and living behind our house at the dam.”

The couple is now also in the process of beefing up their security and changing their locks, seeing the suspect took off with a bunch of keys.

Warrant Officer Vathiswa Jacobs, a spokesperson for Worcester police, confirmed they were in the process of investigating the incident. No arrests had been made yet.
