The Department of Social Development (DSD) in the Breede Valley recently hosted a Women’s Day event to celebrate their female clients who are survivors of substance abuse and gender-based violence.

“It is our mission to give accolades to women in recovery as well as the women who are guardian-angels in our communities. Women who render support to other women that experiences difficulties,” social worker, Nuraan Adams told Standard.

The event was held at the Lion’s Club and saw many women (and even men) come together to celebrate this worthy cause.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) partnered with the DSD to host this special occasion. Some of the keynote speakers were Anette Steyn, Nomonde Bushula and Caitlin Fortuin. They spoke about overcoming substance abuse and the strength of women as a whole.

Social workers and social auxiliary workers of the local DSD office were involved in making this event a successful one.

“The atmosphere was filled with excitement and appreciation for being recognised and honoured. Those in attendance said they felt loved. God’s presence was tangible when the women had a moment of silence to commemorate all the women we have lost through substance abuse and violence. White doves were released into the sky as a symbol of hope,” Adams added.

If you have a passion for helping children and are interested in partnering with the Department of Social Development by opening your home to care and safeguard vulnerable children, you can volunteer to become a safety parent.

A safety parent is a person over the age of 18 years old, who has been recruited, screened, and trained by the Department of Social Development to provide emergency care and protection within the community.

As a safety parent you would provide a temporary home for children at high risk while an investigation by the Children’s Court is underway. For more information on volunteering, you can contact your nearest Social Development office or the Worcester branch at 023 348 5300.
