The 19-year-old first year student of Stellenbosch University who has been in the headlines this past week for urinating on a fellow student’s desk at the Huis Marais residence, hails from Worcester.
Theuns du Toit, who was identified by the victim’s father on social media, is an alumni of an elite school in Worcester where he was ranked among a number of top students who received various accolades. Du Toit was part of the school’s first rugby team, was part of provincial sports teams and matriculated amongst the top academic group of his class in 2021. He went to Stellenbosch to study Law.
Du Toit has since been charged with breaking and entering, malicious damage to property and crimen injuria.
The circulating video clip of Du Toit urinating on the desk and laptop of a fellow student sent shock waves through the country. He allegedly qualified his actions by allegedly saying: “Dit is ’n wit ding om te doen (It is a white thing to do).” The event sent shock waves through the country and also triggered many people into speaking about the racism they experience at various institutions.
The incident happened between Du Toit and Babalo Ndwayana in the early hours of Sunday (15 May) morning.
Du Toit broke into Ndwayana’s room at approximately 04:00 on Sunday morning and proceeded to urinate on his belongings. Ndwayana switched the light on and realised that there was someone in his room.
Du Toit is no stranger to Ndwayana, as he is friends with his roommate.
On another video making the rounds on social media Du Toit apologises to Ndwayana and fellow Huis Marais residents in an urgent house meeting called on Monday.
There were many attempts from Standard to reach his parents, however all these attempts were unsuccessful.
