On 6 August Boland Bowls organised a junior skills camp at its headquarters at the Worcester bowling club.
Clubs were notified to nominate young and upcoming players from their clubs to participate in this amazing venture that Boland bowls has initiated to develop the sport and ensure that the region keeps on producing quality bowlers.
There were nearly 50 representatives from the various clubs as far afield as the West Coast, Overberg and Cape Winelands, the youngest turning 9 later this year.
The participating groups were divided into their different age groups – u-15, u-18, u-25 and u-30 – and various bowling games, exercises, skills and leadership development activities took place throughout the day.
This initiative was held to ensure growth in this very underrated sport, that can be enjoyed by young, old, merely socially inclined or competitive sports people.
There was some great talent on show over the weekend, so the future of bowls in the Boland may well be ensured, according to the organisers.
The Worcester club is open to new members, so all those interested in joining, even as a way for parents to get youngsters off the couch, can email worcesterbowls@gmail.com or see updates on its Facebook page “worcesterbowlingclub”.
