ZWELETHEMBA – As the winter season approaches, the Zwelethemba Neighbourhood Watch (ZNW) is doubling down on its efforts to ensure the safety and security of its community. Founded in February 2022 by chairperson Nkululeko Mangweni, in response to a surge in break-ins, it has quickly become a cornerstone of the community’s efforts to combat crime in Zwelethemba.
The recent Brandwacht Trail Hike served as both a team-building exercise and preparation for the challenges the winter months often bring.
Despite the rugged terrain, ZNW members tackled the 10 km hike with determination and solidarity, embodying their motto, “We leave no one behind, we are not chasing time but success”.
Reflecting on the experience, Mothusi Letsika, Liason Officer of ZNW, highlighted the importance of unity in the face of adversity. “On that trail we left no-one behind,” he said. “We did everything together, as hard as it was, but we also had fun.”
The hike not only strengthened the bonds among ZNW members, but also served as a reminder of the challenges they face in their mission to keep the community safe. Limited resources, such as broken torches and inadequate patrol gear, present ongoing obstacles for the organisation. Additionally, ZNW continues to seek greater support from the community to uphold its efforts.
Letsika expressed the group’s broader vision for community engagement. He said: “We want to do more than just combat crime. We envision rehab sessions for struggling perpetrators, showing them love and support because they are our brothers.”
Despite these challenges, ZNW remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety and well-being of Zwelethemba residents. To further this mission, the group calls on community members, particularly youth, to lend their support by volunteering for patrols and rejecting the purchase of stolen goods.
He emphasised that community safety is a collective responsibility.
“This is not just for certain people. Anyone can get involved. This is for our community, the safety of our people. Let us join hands in combating crime.”
As winter approaches, the Zwelethemba Neighbourhood Watch stands ready to face the challenges ahead, fortified by its recent team-building efforts and unwavering dedication to the well-being of their community.
