WORCESTER – Breede Valley Municipality (BVM) has reason to celebrate as it secures an impressive second place out of 26 local municipalities in the latest Governance Performance Index (GPI) rankings published by Good Governance Africa (GGA). This achievement is further underscored by its position as one of the top four performing municipalities in the Western Cape out of 24, and a commendable standing nationally out of 205 municipalities.
The GGA, an independent research and advocacy organisation dedicated to enhancing governance across the continent, uses a rigorous ranking instrument to provide stakeholders with a comprehensive index of municipal-level governance performance.
This tool not only offers valuable insights into individual municipality performance but also facilitates targeted interventions where necessary.
BVM’s ascent to the second position marks an improvement from its previous standing at 18th place in the 2021 GPI report. This reflects the municipality’s unwavering commitment to governance excellence and underscores its dedication to fostering transparency and accountability.
David McThomas, the Municipal Manager, expressed his satisfaction with the latest ranking, emphasising its potential to bolster investor confidence in the municipality.
“This achievement is significant as it validates our relentless pursuit of clean governance,” he remarked.
Despite acknowledging lingering service-delivery challenges in certain areas, McThomas remained optimistic about the overall path of the municipality.
“While there is still work to be done this positive ranking serves as a testament to our steadfast commitment to progress.”
He also credited the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders such as the Council, community members, and staff for contributing to BVM’s success. He emphasised the pivotal role played by these stakeholders in steering the municipality towards its overarching goals and objectives.
Moving forward, BVM remains dedicated to building upon its recent accomplishments and addressing remaining challenges with diligence and determination.
The municipality’s continued focus on good governance principles is poised to further enhance its standing both provincially and nationally, solidifying its reputation as a beacon of excellence in municipal administration.
