WORCESTER – A brave one-year-old black-and-white border collie dog has been reunited with her family after a terrifying ordeal.
On Friday morning, 5 April, accompanied by Tarryn and Katie Martin, on a routine land survey between Zweletemba and the Hex Tex Factory, Autumn’s vigilance proved invaluable when the trio were unexpectedly confronted by two youths wielding knives.
According to Carol Martin, Autumn’s owner, the situation quickly escalated as the assailants forcibly pushed Tarryn and Katie to the ground, threatening violence and demanding valuables. In the chaos Autumn’s keen senses detected the danger, prompting her to bark a warning before slipping out of her straps and fleeing in fear.
In a desperate bid to escape, Tarryn and Katie rushed back to their vehicle, where Carol was anxiously waiting. Demonstrating remarkable quick thinking, Carol managed the car skilfully, enabling Tarryn and Katie to leap in safely. Despite one assailant managing briefly to enter the vehicle, her swift action defeated their attempts, ultimately leading them to leave the car.
The hours saw a community united in the search for Autumn, with locals, authorities and various organisations rallying together to comb the area.
Sightings of Autumn provided hope, culminating in a triumphant moment on Monday, 8 April, when she was spotted crossing the N1 at Bergsig Motors. With the assistance of a friend using a drone and a vigilant community member, Tarryn was able to locate and catch Autumn safely. She had sustained injuries to her feet and a hind leg during her ordeal.
“I am very grateful to the Worcester community for their unwavering support throughout the search, grateful for their support in helping to bring Autumn safely home.”
Autumn was receiving medical attention for her injuries and recuperating in Cape Town surrounded by her loving family. Her courageous actions serve as a poignant reminder of the profound bond shared between humans and their loyal canine companions
