Power Punch, a non-profit organisation in Worcester, will host a boxing tournament on Saturday 19 November, the proceeds of which will go to the Maranatha Christian Centre in the town.

“The boxing tournament was arranged to raise awareness of the central role boxing plays in local communities and how it can serve the common good, particularly when used to raise funds for a good cause,” explained Roscoe Pekeur, founder of Power Punch.

Due to the Maranatha Christian Centre’s agreeing to host the event and availing its premises to the public, Power Punch agreed to donate all the proceeds from the tournament to the church, enabling it to broaden its reach throughout Worcester and its surrounds.

Various sponsors agreed to support it, including Elizabeth Pietersen, a Stellenbosch local, the Habbit Guesthouse, Jeff’s Takeaways and Mybrew coffee shop in Stellenbosch as well as Maties Gymnasium.

A total number of 20 boxers and 10 boxing matches will take place, the boxers different ages and competing in various weight categories, according to Pekeur.

He said neither Power Punch nor any of the boxers will get paid, and neither had any qualms at all about participating solely for charity.

“This is where the sponsors come in. At the moment the Habbit Guesthouse is sponsoring the accommodation for the Western Province boxing president, who is officiating at the tournament, while Golden Valley Casino is sponsoring another room.”

Furthermore, sponsors from Stellenbosch have stepped in to finance the prizes for the boxers.

Tickets are R10 for children and R20 for adults. Doors open for spectators from 13:00 and the first match starts at 14:00.
