The fire raging on Bainskloof Pass is still burning out of control, the Cape Wineland District Municipality (DWDM) confirmed this morning (January 29).
Currently the right flank of the mountain is already brought under control, but the left flank is still burning out of control. The fire burned through approximately 261 acres of vegetation.
Firefighters from CWDM, CapeNature and Winelands Fire Protection Association have been working since yesterday afternoon to bring the fire under control, which is fuelled by strong winds.
“There are nine firefighting vehicles with various firefighters assisted by two contracted ground crews from NCC, bringing the total to 96 crew members,” CWDM said in a statement.
Three helicopters were deployed, Whiskey and Tango from Henley Air and the Black Hawk from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.
Teams continue to fight the raging fire and hope to extinguish the flames as soon as possible.
