Zwelethemba’s community swimming pool finally opened on Wednesday 23 February.
This comes after the community waited for years and pleaded for a swimming pool. Hundreds of children went to cool off in the scorching heat at the newly built swimming pool on Sunday.
When Standard went there on Saturday the pool had already reached its capacity of 500. Children were overjoyed with their new community swimming pool. On Sunday it was the same story, one boy said that he will be at the swimming pool every day, even after school during the week.
“Finally we can swim,” said one girl after the gate to the swimming pool was opened on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Breede Valley Municipality (BVM), the pool has been a big need within the community, an historic moment it was especially proud to cut the ribbon on.
“Today is a great day,” said Mayor Antoinette Steyn. “Today is a happy day. We did it. On our own. We had no external assistance in this regard, and we could make it happen. I hope that this is the start of a new dawn. That we can make things happen. We should focus on implementing more such projects – to the benefit of all.
“The maximum capacity of the swimming pool is 500.”
