The past week has seen the community of Zwelethemba unite in fighting the scourge of crime and violence.
Following the arrest of four men who took the law in their own hands by beating up a young man who had broken into a corner shop in Mayinjane Street, the community has since made calls to restore dignity to Zwelethemba.
Video footage of how the shop was looted was shared widely on social media, and clearly shows the accused in action.
It is believed the four men took the young man into a van and attacked him, however, and the case has since been closed.
Last Wednesday (16 February), a community meeting was held at the Thusong Centre, with various stakeholders such as the police, community policing forums as well as ward councillors to address the issue of violence and crime, which seem to have taken over the community.
Gang violence and house robberies have been on a steady increase these past weeks in the neighbourhood.
Plans to restore safety to the community were tabled and the police prompted more visibility in the streets.
Community members also expressed their frustration with the police over how cases are being handled.
In response to this frustration, Col Willis Smith of the Worcester police explained there is an issue of being understaffed, but guaranteed there would be visible policing from the past weekend.
Furthermore, Smith reiterated that the police would be working closely with the neighbourhood watch to help combat crime.
