POLOKWANE – A 53-year-old woman from Seshego in Limpopo is set to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today on Monday, facing a charge of bribery. This followed her arrest for allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer while on duty.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, said the woman was arrested at the Mankweng Community Service Centre on Saturday while allegedly trying to bribe an officer for the release of her husband, who is currently in custody over alleged dealing in dagga. He said the woman reportedly arrived at about 21:30 at the Community Service Centre.

“A police constable attached to Polokwane Public Order Policing was on duty busy writing up a docket when a female suspect from Zone 1 Extension in Seshego approached him. The woman allegedly offered the member R4 000 in exchange for the release of her husband who was in police custody in connection with a charge of dealing in dagga,” said Ledwaba. He said the officer did not solicit, request or accept the money and warned the suspect that her conduct was unlawful.

“Despite the warning, the suspect allegedly removed the cash from her pocket and forcefully placed it into the constable’s hands. The member immediately apprehended the suspect for bribery,” said Ledwaba, adding that the investigations are continuing in both cases of alleged bribery of a police officer and her husband arrest connection with dealing in dagga.

Ledwaba said the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers has commended the member for his integrity and professionalism in refusing to be compromised and for upholding the law.
