CAPE TOWN – South African theatre audiences are getting their first taste of Broadway glamour as Pretty Woman: The Musical makes its local debut this month, bringing the beloved 1990 film to life on stage.

The musical adaptation of the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere romantic comedy opens at Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre on Wednesday 18 March, before transferring to Johannesburg’s Teatro at Montecasino from 24 April.

Based on the hit Hollywood film, the stage version features music by Grammy Award-winning artist Bryan Adams, who has expressed his enthusiasm for the production. The show combines the original Roy Orbison classic “Oh, Pretty Woman” with new songs written specifically for the stage adaptation.

Timeless story

The musical tells the story of Vivian and Edward, two unlikely characters whose chance encounter leads to an unexpected romance. Since its Broadway premiere in 2018, the show has enjoyed successful runs in London’s West End and toured across North America and Europe.

“The show delivered high-energy ensemble numbers, dazzling costumes and sets, and a soundtrack that had the audience taking a trip back in time to the 90s,” noted Broadway World in their review.

Local production company Showtime Management is bringing the musical to South Africa in partnership with Crossroads Live North America. The production features an all-South African cast, crew and orchestra working alongside international creative staff.

“This timeless story has captured the hearts of audiences around the world,” said Hazel Feldman from Showtime Management. “Local theatre-goers will experience the unforgettable songs, dazzling performances, and all the romance, humour and heart that made the film a classic.”

The original creative team includes book writers Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton, who created the original film, with songs by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell provides direction and choreography.

The production carries a PG rating of 12+ due to adult themes, and parental guidance is recommended.

Group discounts apply for parties of 20 or more, and special Tuesday discounts are available.
