JEFFREYS BAY – A forty-two-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning, 12 February, following a report laid by his wife who allegedly exposed his infidelity and subsequently alerted police to his suspected criminal activities.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the suspect was apprehended at approximately 04:55 and faces charges of fraud, perjury, and impersonating a police officer.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect posed as a South African Police Service (SAPS) member to defraud vulnerable unemployed youths by promising them job opportunities in exchange for payment,” said Nkohli.
He is expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
Nkohli said this arrest follows a warning issued to the public about a fraudulent social media scam circulating primarily via WhatsApp, falsely advertising SAPS vacancies in Jeffreys Bay.
He said the messages included the fabricated name of a purported police captain for recruitment inquiries.
“SAPS commends the member of the public who came forward with information that led to this arrest. Families and community members are urged to continue reporting any suspicious or criminal activities, even when it involves those close to them,” said Nkohli.
He further said that crime prevention is a shared responsibility.
“Information provided in confidence can make the difference in stopping criminals and protecting the vulnerable,” said Nkohli.
