The West Coast Cochoqua Tribe and the Gari Guriqua Tribe from the West Coast handed over a memorandum to role-players on Saturday 1 November in Langebaan. The memorandum states that they welcome safe and sustainable development that will be beneficial for the “recognised” local communities. They demand that no entities, individuals. government officials or environmental organisations speak on behalf of them. They say they are not against development, but exclusion. The “tribes” said the future of the West Coast must be built with the people, not without them. Paramount Chief Carmen Rodgers said they stood firm in unity, which made the protest a huge success. “The people have spoken.”
