It was a day of celebration as Rotary Langebaan had its official launch.
The charter event took place on Saturday 21 May at the West Coast Fossil Park (WCFP) with guests including the Saldanha Bay Municipality Mayor André Truter, June Webber president of Waterfront Rotary, Dave Mitchell, chairperson of the board of Trustees of WCFP and more.
Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather Jolene Wicht-Butler was appointed as president along with the charter committee. Langebaan Rotary has now become the 59th club in District 9350.
In a previous article (“Rotarian says Langebaan ready for its own group,” Weslander, 12 May 2022), Butler said Rotary is no longer a boys-only club and their aim is to help the community and make things fun for everyone.
During the weekend’s event WCFP manager Pippa Haarhoff welcomed and thanked the distinguished guests for being in attendance and shared more on the history and existence of the Fossil Park. Mitchell also shared more on the background and spoke from the heart.
Butler said the vision of Rotary is to provide service above self to local community projects and so advance world understanding, goodwill and peace. Butler also mentioned that aside from the social involvement and positive change Rotary wants to make, there is also a fellowship aspect where members will do fundraising events, network and have fun. Langebaan club meets twice a month, on the first and third Thursday.
Webber commended Butler and her team for the amazing success of the charter event. She said that the event ticked all the boxes and could not have been faulted in any way.
“The Fossil Park speakers, Haaroff and Mitchell, blew us away with their informative and fascinating talk on the history of the Fossil Park and climate change. The venue was superb, the cuisine beyond excellent, and in abundance. The music and dancing added to the enjoyment of the celebration of club,” Webber added.
Webber wished Butler and her team all the best and said they have a bright and busy future ahead.
Rotary welcomes anyone who would like to become a Rotarian.
