Six Grade 10 learners from Longacres Private School recently participated in the 4th Laager Rooibos Design Competition.
One learner, Ariana Jansen, did exceptionally well, taking first place in the Digital Design Category.
Diagnosed with autism in Grade R, she had become a source of great pride to mother Michelle for overcoming great odds and achieving what she has.
“When Ariana was diagnosed the specialist said it was doubtful she would ever function in the mainstream or reach higher than foundation phase. I believed in my daugther and empowered myself on autism and autistic needs.
“I walked the walk with all her teachers and supported her all the way and fought inclusivity battles, and whatever else… you name it I have fought it. However tired one becomes of fighting for one’s child one must never give up on them. Autism doesn’t come with a manual, but a family that never gives up.”
On winning, Ariana said it felt like a dream, a one-in-a-million chance, come true.
