The shortage of personnel and resources at the Langebaan Police Station remains a serious concern, according to the Langebaan Community Policing Forum (CPF), following complaints from residents about service delivery at the station.
A resident who contacted Weslander described the station as being “under severe pressure”, claiming there were often too few officers on duty to respond effectively to emergencies. The complainant wished to remain anonymous.
The complaint alleged residents are sometimes told no patrol vehicle is available that responses to reported crimes are delayed and some complainants are discouraged from opening criminal cases.
The resident also raised concerns about the shortage of detectives, delays in processing firearm-licence applications, and the absence of permanent leadership at the station following the transfer of the station commander.
Langebaan CPF chairperson Peter Lindenberg said that while most of the issues raised reflected the challenges facing the station he believed most of the police officers remained committed to serving the community. “The majority of the facts mentioned in the complaint are true. However, I believe the majority of police members are good officers. There is only a small group of members whose conduct is of concern.”
He said the CPF continued to support the police where possible, but could not replace the police.
According to Lindenberg the CPF recently assisted with improvements at the station, including refurbishing the building, installing an inverter and providing radio communication equipment to strengthen cooperation among the police, local security companies, the CPF and neighbourhood watches.
He said these partnerships have contributed to a noticeable reduction in crime in Langebaan.
Lindenberg added that the challenges experienced in Langebaan reflect a broader national problem. “The South African
Police Service is understaffed and underfunded nationally. The lack of resources affects stations across the country.”
He also expressed concern about the continued lack of stable leadership at the station, noting that the current acting station commander is due to retire within the next three weeks.
“We remain in regular contact with Langebaan Police Station, but appointing permanent leadership and increasing personnel remain urgent priorities.”
