So the English saying goes. Never has it been more true than today where more and more children are raised by single parents for whatever reason. And though many do absolutely everything in their power to fill the void and fulfil the roles of both parents, it doesn’t hurt to have the help of a loving family member or friend to lean on in times when one struggles to keep the boat afloat because let’s face it we, parent or not, all need a bit of help from time to time.

National Child Protection Week is celebrated from 27 May to 2 June and although much of the awareness in the past have focused on violence against children, the safety of children deserves a much broader approach. Weslander has therefore decided to dedicate the month of May to children by running a four-week long focus on child safety and protection to commemorate National Child Protection Week. The first of the special focus can be found on pages 14 to 16 in today’s edition. Over the next number of weeks we will talk to local experts and share relevant information on topics that can threaten a child safety, but also provide single parents or caregivers of children with tips on how to address certain challenges and cope with situations where a child’s life could be endangered. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, teacher, grandparent, au pair or whatever other role you may fulfil in a child’s life and caretaking, we hope the topics and tips will provide some peace of mind as you journey towards raising the one that was entrusted to you to the best of your ability and knowledge.
