Parents of learners at Eden Primary in Vredenburg shared their concerns about non-compliance of the Covid-19 regulations after reported cases.
Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, confirms that a learner and a teacher at Eden Primary School did test positive for the coronavirus infection.
She says that these cases were reported to the district office.
“In both cases the staff member and learner were in self-isolation due to being in close contact with someone who had tested positive. Therefore, when they had received their positive diagnosis, they had already been absent from schools for a number of days.”
Hammond says the protocol is clear, decontamination only takes place within a 72 hour period. “Therefore the school followed the necessary processes as the two persons were last at the school more than 72 hours prior.”
Furthermore Hammond says schools do not close as a result of a positive case and that only close contacts need to isolate.
“All schools are to adhere to the cleaning protocols, so that surfaces are cleaned on a regular and daily basis.”
She adds that it is important that all schools communicate with parents should a positive case be confirmed and close contacts identified. “This may just require communication with the relevant grade parents. If a parent is concerned that a school is not adhering to safety protocols they can contact the district office.”
