A police officer arrested a man for trying to bribe him to get out of paying a traffic fine, after being caught speaking on his cellphone while driving.
According to captain Tania Helfrich, a spokesperson for the West Coast Police District, a police officer stationed at Klawer, in full uniform, was conducting routine patrol duties at the Klawer Weighbridge on Sunday 27 November when a driver tried his luck with him.
Pulled over at 15:37 for talking on his cellphone, the man offered the police officer R200 cash to avoid receiving a traffic fine.
Helfrich said the man was arrested on the spot and charged with bribery.
The 84-year-old suspect, a resident of Klawer, appeared in the
Vanrhynsdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday 28 November.
