A shack fire in White City, Saldanha, has left two people dead.

The fire broke out in Steenbras Street in the early morning hours of Wednesday 12 June.

Information supplied by the police revealed that four occupants were inside the shack at the time of the fire.

One of the four woke up due to the smoke and escaped through a back window.

He was later found lying in the road with serious burn wounds.

Another woman also escaped without injuries.

According to Capt Tania Helfrich, police spokesperson for the West Coast District, when police arrived on the scene, fire fighters were already in action. Helfrich said a male was found sitting next to a couch and was declared dead on the scene. He was later identified by his mother.

“A female was found on the bed, struggling to breathe. She was taken to hospital, her family later gave permission to turn off life-support.”
