Langebaan Athletics Club (LAC) held its annual prestige awards ceremony at the Langebaan City Hall.

Attended by about 200 guests, the theme for the event was a “Night with the Stars” and took place on Friday 15 November. The evening kicked off with an overview and background on LAC by its chairman Christopher Rodgers.

He spelt out the vision of LAC, “One Plan, One Vision and One Mission”. That it’s to foster athletics as a sport in the West Coast District, to play a leading role in developing young athletes and to support the athletes in every way to be the best version of themselves.

The guest speaker was Bertram Vraagom, former president of Saldanha Bay Rugby Club, seasoned sports administrator and businessman. His message stressed continuous discipline, working hard to be the best version of oneself and rising above one’s circumstances, from the evils in communities.

The winners were as follows:

1. Merit Trophy: Working with the youth in the club – Livia van As, Leroy Jacobs and Dr Frans Venter

2. Best Academic Performance foundation phase: Haydene Brains (Langebaan Primary School)

3. Best Academic Performance intermediate phase: Larkham Jason (Langebaan Primary School)

4. Best Academic Performance senior phase: E-Jay Wilsnach (Langebaan Primary School)

5. Best Academic Performance Further Education and Training Phase: Ryan Arries (Weston High School)

6. Newcomer of the Year: Amissa Lindert (Jurie Hayes Primary School) and Justin Andrew (Jurie Hayes Primary School)

7. Volunteer of the Year: Keanan Noemdoe

8. Technical/Administrative Excellence: John Hutchinson and Christopher Rodgers

9. Best boys and girl cross country athlete for 2024: Angell Pholman (Langebaan Primary School) and Clinton Phillips (Hopefield Primary School)

10. Outstanding Performance Track and Field South Africa Champs 2024: Marine Grobler (Hopefield High School), Angell Pholman (Langebaan Primary School), Percy-Lee Janse (West Coast School of Skills) and Luseaton Fryer (West Coast School of Skills)

11. Sportswoman of the Year
