Taking first place in the World Skills competition is a great achievement for Simiso Sibiyela.
The student from West Coast College, Vredenburg Campus, walked away the winner in the category Renewable Energy in Durban recently.
He competed against top students from TVET colleges across South Africa in the nationals and showcased his talent.
The World Skills competition brings the best young upcoming artisans and technicians from more than 100 countries.
“This is one of my biggest achievements,” Sibiyela said, “I have never doubted myself. I knew I was going to win. I would like to thank West Coast College and my family for believing in me and making this achievement possible.”
He will now join Team South Africa in Shanghai, China, where he will compete against international peers in the field of renewable energy in September.
“This achievement means a lot, as it comes with a lot of exposure to the industry, and it will be my first time to travel abroad. I already have my own registered company and I would like to be assisted with funding and tools, particularly so I can create job opportunities for others.”
West Coast College wishes Sibiyela all the best as he will be flying the South African flag high and making the West Coast proud.
