Chess club sets a record

There is a strong sense of pride in Vredenburg as Genesis Chess Club celebrates a record number of players selected for the West Coast Schools Team. For the club, the achievement reflects years of dedication and a commitment to developing young talent.

The selected players are Ben Mdluli, Indiphile Limani, Lutho Tshamlambo and Inga Kobese, as well as Luquezia Kotze, Maxlin Lee Kotze, Chloe Mitchels and Shaundré Lewaks, who were not available for the team photo. All eight learners attend local schools, and their success is being celebrated across the community as a sign of growing opportunity and youth leadership.

The team will travel to George over the weekend of 1 May, where they will compete for selection to the Western Cape Schools Team. For these players, it marks an important step forward, carrying the hopes of their families, schools and community.

Their progress is guided by dedicated coaches Lyndon Julies and Andre Lewaks, who focus op building not only strong players but disciplined, focused individuals. Julies, the club’s president, said the achievement goes beyond chess. He highlighted that many of the players come from challenging circumstances, yet continue to choose growth and discipline.

He added that the milestone shows the depth of talent in the community and the importance of support in helping young people succeed.

Despite the success, financial barriers remain a concern. The cost per player is about R1 280, excluding accommodation and meals, placing pressure op some families. The club is appealing to the community for assistance.
