On Thursday 17 September, at approximately 19:15, I experienced a very strange noise that a cat was either stuck or entangled in the chimney on my roof.
I could hear the struggle and was not sure what to do, and called the local fire department for guidance, and I spoke to Mrs Burger. She was very helpful and called the animal rescue to assist me. I was under the impression the fire department still performed the task of rescuing animals.
I was worried because it was getting late and they may not respond in time. To my surprise, the fire department returned my call saying its personnel were coming, and they were at my house within 10 minutes. As we all know service delivery nowadays is seen as non-existent, but what should be acknowledged as a source of pride are the departments in our community that still deliver services, to both human and animal, something that should be trumpeted and made aware of.
This was more than just about saving a cat; it was about going the extra mile, beyond mere duty and responsibility.
We need to acknowledge and recognise the good work done by our fire department.
Perhaps, if we had a better understanding of the danger their jobs as firefighters entail we would appreciate them more.
They are so passionate about their work it is noticeable – or, as the saying goes, “when everyone runs out they run in.”
This letter is to express gratitude for the great job people do for our community of Atlantis. Keep going!
