His appointment comes after acting in an interim capacity since April. Following a full sitting of the council on Thursday 27 July, Executive Mayor Alderman Karel Papier, Deputy Mayor John Michels and Speaker Derick Appel were among the first to congratulate Solomons-Johannes on his new appointment.

The municipality is situated in the Overberg district and includes the towns of Caledon, Grabouw, Villiersdorp, Genadendal, Greyton, Riviersonderend, Botrivier and Tesselaarsdal.

Solomons-Johannes, who has more than 25 years’ experience as a local government official, started his career as an auxiliary, compliance and support officer at the City of Cape Town in 1997.

Since then he was Head of Systems Integration, Special Projects and Disaster Operations within the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre and Director of Urban Management. He joined Theewaterskloof as Director of Community Services last January.

According to the municipality he passionately drove this department under challenging circumstances, in addition to the position of Acting Municipal Manager.

“I look forward to unlocking and grabbing new opportunities with my team of dedicated officials,” Solomons-Johannes said. “I have been Acting Municipal Manager for a few months and it is an honour to step into the position full-time.” He described himself as a dynamic and motivated person who aspires to making a meaningful contribution to the success of the team he leads through the implementation of coordinated and integrated functional management strategies that focuses on the implementation of strategic objectives that will improve the quality of life for all citizens. Solomons-Johannes pointed out the municipality faces many challenges, but every challenge presents new opportunities.

“I would like to thank council for the trust it has placed in me, and I undertake to reward their trust with innovation and success. I would also like to thank them for affording me the opportunity to serve the communities of Theewaterskloof.

“Hard work awaits us, but we have already laid the foundation, and with the help of my dedicated team we will continue to work towards providing dignified services to all people, families and communities within Theewaterskloof.”
