“The South African Police Service is a law enforcer, and not a law breaker, and officers under my command adhere to this.”

So says newly appointed station commander Col Cyril Nkuna (49).

Born in Soweto, and who always wanted to be a police officer, Nkuna says only hard work had brought him to where he is today.

After working at various police stations across South Africa the new station commander was the Vispol head at Gugulethu Police Station.

Nkuna first started in the Western Cape in 2005, before transferring to Bloemfontein, returning to the province in 2010 as supply chain head of Cape Town Central Police Station.

He was promoted to full colonel in 2019. “On learning about the challenges at Atlantis Police Station I immediately raised my hand when the Acting Provincial Commissioner asked if I would go to Atlantis.”

Nkuna says it is all systems go, and assures he is here to serve and protect the community of Atlantis. He believes the town can become a safe environment for the community but “everybody needs to join hands.”

As he starts a new era as the station commander Nkuna says he is not interested in what has been said about the local station in the media.

On his first day as the new commander started with an internal imbizo on Wednesday 5 May at Protea Park Primary. “We now know what our challenges are and will start from there,” he assures.

“I firmly believe in our code of conduct, because the Constitution of the country protects our human rights and all members will adhere to it.”

Asked about police brutality in Atlantis, Nkuna made it clear he would not allow it, saying “no officer will use his or her fists to do the talking.”

He says his door will be open, and residents can contact him directly on 082 411 4061.
