The new Mayoral Committee is intended to turn Cape Town into a city of hope, newly elected Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said when announcing its portfolio heads on Monday 22 November.

He announced his team would sign performance agreements as well as undergo lifestyle audits.

Asked when these would be signed, the new Mayor said he had no specific time-frame in mind. “I think certainly by the time we close for the end of the year we can have them all wrapped up.”

Geordin-Hill added that unless there were profound objections the performance agreements between him and his team would be made public either via the City’s website or through the media.

“After much thought and consultation, I am confident the team announced today will deliver on the vision we put forward to the voters of Cape Town, and which I set out in my inauguration speech,” he said.

“This team has been chosen for its combination of experience, skills, fresh energy and thinking, and commitment to making the city of Cape Town one we can all be proud of.

“They know that they have my full support, and I am excited for the future of Cape Town and all that we are going to achieve together.

“We are not here to govern for its own sake, but to build a city that every Capetonian and South African is proud of, one that shows the best of what South Africa can do when we work together. This team, along with the City’s senior management, will have primary responsibility for delivering on that vision and purpose, to ensure every resident enjoys a more caring, more inclusive, more prosperous, more united, more respectful, safer and freer city.

“We want every resident to know, feel and see the ‘DA difference’ in their communities, no matter where they live or whom they vote for.

“As for the Mayoralty, selection as a Mayoral Committee member is a distinct privilege. It comes with great power to improve people’s lives in meaningful ways. It is a job that should be undertaken with reverence and with absolute dedication.”
