Atlantis police officers are always “on duty” and on the lookout to help prevent crime.

On Tuesday 12 April at 10:03 an off-duty police officer noticed an unknown male standing on the corner behind the local court taking close account of vehicles escorting inmates to and from prison, when appearing in court.

The policeman notified his colleagues – members attached to the Crime Prevention Unit of Atlantis police – and pointed out the spot where he saw the individual. The suspect had placed a packet with 19 Mandrax tablets and 34 tik bankies, wrapped, with the intention of smuggling them into the prison, at the scene.

The street value was R3 000.

A 48-year-old male handling the package was identified and arrested for possession of tik and Mandrax. The police were aware of drug smuggling occurring at the court cells, and random searches will be conducted at court.

Altantis police is issuing a stern warning to criminals or would-be drug smugglers: “Once caught in possession you will be given a harsh punishment.”
