Sports worldwide and in the country have been on hold since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, the English Premier League was the second major sport to return to action behind closed doors, and with strict coronavirus guidelines in place.
The move will open up the possibility of sports such as tennis and golf.
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa laid the rules out for all sports locally.
The new set of instructions form part of the amended new Level 3 lockdown regulations.
Contact and non-contact sports may resume, but clubs and bodies will have to write to the minister within 14 days to apply to resume their sporting codes.
Some codes may also resume training without any spectators, and must comply with the country’s coronavirus health protocols.
The minister also said the following measures also apply: A sport body must keep a register and track record, which must be archived for at least six months with personal details of all athletes, support staff and officials.
Athletes and support staff must be tested for Covid-19 before any resumption of sport. Extra precautions must be taken for geographical “hotspot” areas, and that non-contact sport may resume matches subject to the above restrictions and depending on the size of the code of sport.
In Atlantis, soccer clubs have welcomed the news and are looking forward in taking to their respective fields soon.
David Rossouw from Jomos Power Football Club says there are currently no football matches being played and they are waiting on feedback from the South African Football Association (SAFA).
Members of SAFA’s MEC committee and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) met last week to discuss the way forward for both national and local soccer.
Rossouw, however, said according to his understanding some professional soccer clubs were granted permission to start with training but cannot participate in any of the remaining fixtures of the season.
SAFA will release a statement soon with expectations and the way forward for football in the country.
