The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will pay grants out in April.

“The President’s call to action has made us take our own precautionary measures,” explained Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Social Development.

Social grants to older persons and persons with disabilities will be paid out from 30 and 31 March. Other beneficiaries will be able to access their grants from 1 April. Beneficiaries are:

. Urged not to collect grants on the first day of payouts, as traffic to stores increases, which poses a health risk.. They must remember that money paid into a Sassa account is accessible at any time of the month, and not just on payout day.

The department suspended all integrated community registration outreach programmes during the time of lockdown, so all home visits will be halted. For clients older than 75 years and bedridden, a procurator or proxy can be appointed.

Clients will have to complete an application for this, in writing. This, along with other necessary documents, will have to be submitted. Visitors are asked not to visit local offices, and rather call, with simple enquiries. Priority will be given to elderly, frail, people with disabilities, mothers with children as well as pregnant women at pay points.
