The Atlantis Special Economic Zone Company (ASEZCo) was excited to welcome back all school governing bodies, school management, educators and especially learners as they embarked on a new school year.

Said Jean Baartman, skills-development specialist at the ASEZ: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the matric class of 2024 for achieving an impressive pass rate of 86,6%. Special recognition goes to Atlantis Senior Secondary School for its remarkable improvement, earning an extraordinary certificate from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for boosting its pass rate from 69% to 80%.”

Baartman said ASEZ, through various initiatives, supported learner success in such areas as science and technology, art, engineering and mathematics (STEAM) with focused assistance, especially in mathematics, to help learners to appreciate and excel.

“Our careers expos offer guidance on future career opportunities, on which we partner with academic institutions such as the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Stellenbosch University (SU), and West Coast and Northlink TVET College.”

Baartman said this upcoming year promises to be extraordinary as the ASEZ collaborates with local companies to expand their STEAM initiatives that will support more than 200 learners with soft skills, technical training and artisanal development.

He added that the skills-development sector has experienced a turbulent period due to the transition from Legacy qualifications to the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) framework, marking a significant shift toward industry-specific and job-focused credentials. “Despite these challenges, the skills unit remains steadfast in delivering impactful training interventions, demonstrating a commitment to excellence that continues to earn recognition and favour from our diverse stakeholders.

“As we move forward into this academic year let us embrace growth, collaboration and discovery,” he said. “To our teachers, continue to inspire with passion. To our learners, approach every challenge with curiosity and determination. Together, we will create a journey enriched with knowledge, resilience and success. May this year serve as a stepping stone to even greater achievements and unforgettable experiences for all.”

With the commitment of schools and local industry partners, this programme is set to ignite curiosity and foster innovation, Baartman encouraged.

Tips to learners for a successful academic year:

Stay organised: Keep track of assignments and deadlines to stay on top of your studies.

Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to seek help or clarification when needed.

Participate actively: Engage in class discussions and activities to enhance your learning experience.

Take care of yourself: Balance your studies with relaxation and self-care to maintain your well-being.

“ASEZ is committed to supporting education in our community,” Baartman ended. “Our partnerships with local schools and the TVET college have proven to be invaluable, creating unique opportunities for our learners to thrive.”
