Atlantis, and especially the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ), will soon be home to a new gas plant.
According to the Department of Trade and Industry the R20 million acetylene gas manufacturing facility “will add discernible impetus to the country’s beneficiation, localisation, employment creation and export revenue generation imperatives.”
The plant is being built by Iconic Gases, a company that specialises in industrial and speciality gasses, and equipment for projects in the oil and gas, offshore and engineering, procurement and construction environments.
The investment pledge was made at the fifth South African Investment Conference hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Johannesburg in April. The department said in a statement the pledges made at the conference contributed to bringing the total value of investment pledges over a five-year investment mobilisation period to R1,51 trillion, exceeding the initial target of R1,2 trillion.
Chief Executive Officer of Iconic Gases Dean Pillay said the construction of the acetylene gas manufacturing plant was at an advanced stage.
“Construction has been taking place for some time and we are satisfied with the pace,” he said.
“As things stand, we are well-positioned to meet our commissioning target of January 2024 when we will be ready to commence production.”
He added some of the gas that will be produced in Cape Town will be exported to several Southern African Development Community countries, including Namibia, Angola and Malawi.
