The Piketberg Challenge is going virtual.

Get on your bike and go, because the Piketberg Elevation Challenge is on, albeit virtual.

The 5th annual Piketberg Elevation Challenge, hosted by The Sports Trust, has been reinvented due to the current pandemic, and the organisers are excited to announce their inaugural Sports Trust Virtual Cycle Challenge 2020.

The new Challenge will take place on Sunday 11 October.

Funds from the race will go to serving the community of Piketberg, host town of the annual event.

“The year so far has been one of the most challenging for all of us, wherever we may be in the world, where we in some way or another have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and have had to change the way we go about our daily routines,” said Alderman Ray van Rooy, Executive Mayor of Bergrivier.

The challenge is open to local and international cyclists of any age. Participants can choose among a 5 km, 20 km, 50 km and 108 km, distance. Organisers urge cyclists to make it a family affair, as this is a virtual challenge and can be completed anywhere on a road bike or mountain bike on the day.

Cyclists must remember to wear a helmet and stay safe.

Participants can track their times with their fitness devices or the STRAVA app, and then manually upload the details to Finish Time, the event’s timing partner.

According to Ryno du Plessis, Marketing Manager of World Sports Betting, the sponsors are excited about the event.

“In these uncertain times the world of sport be it leisure or professional sports has to think outside the box,” he says, “and this initiative by The Sports Trust ticks all the boxes.”

World Sport Betting will give vouchers away to the first 100 entrants over the age of 18 years in each distance category .

The entry fee is R50 and must be booked via www.Quicket.co.za.

Monies raised will go to sustainable food gardens, educational support for the youth as well as mentorship programmes.

Mike Tippett, Manager of The Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme, says: “We are very excited to be hosting our first virtual cycle challenge, which is for the benefit of the impoverished community of Piketberg, and sincerely appreciate the ongoing support of our partners and sponsors who have shown their support of this inaugural event.”

The Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme is a long-term sustainable programme, now in its 16th year, and through the support of Nedbank and our other partners has brought the sport of cycling to 12 schools in the Western Cape, including Steynville Secondary School in Piketberg.
