The City of Cape Town reminds its customers to make use of a 90-day grace period it has imposed for motor vehicle registration and licencing.

This applies only if they needed to renew their licence between 23 March and 31 May 2020, but could not do so because of lockdown, and have only until 29 August to do so.

To avoid queues and prevent the spread of Covid-19, make use of online services to renew licences or do account payments before heading to a customer office. Customers are encouraged to phone ahead as some offices may close unexpectedly due to Covid-19 positive cases. It is strongly advised that offices be visited in person only for urgencies or if customers cannot make use of online services available.

The 90-day grace period applies for: . Expired driving licence cards. Learner’s licences. Professional driving permits (PrDPs). Roadworthy certificates. Temporary driving licences. Vehicle registration and licence renewal discs.

In addition, the validity period for the renewal of a motor trade number licence is extended for a further six months from 1 June. For motorists who applied before 26 March, and meet all the requirements, their discs will still arrive. Customers who applied after 26 March would need to reapply online.
