We are taking our subcouncil meetings to all corners of our municipal area!
While we had all our meetings in the Wesfleur municipal building we felt the need to bring them to different venues across the area so as many people as possible could attend.
Our last meeting was our first rotational subcouncil meeting, which was held at Koeberg Library in Duynefontein. The next meeting will be at the Robinvale Sports Field, Starling Road. We look forward to all the different venues to come.
. The City has completed its budget public participation process. In the period 1 April to 3 May it held 24 public meetings across the city.
The City received more than 380 submissions, over 1 300 of them specific comments. These have been considered, and the final draft budget with the changes made was tabled at the council meeting on 31 May, with the new financial year starting 1 July.
Subcouncil 1 hosted two meetings, one in Robinvale and the other in Blouberg. I want to thank every resident who took the time to engage with us. We received so much input from our meetings that I am still busy making contact with those who attended almost a month later. This has, however, not prevented us from working on many of the matters raised.
. Over and above the theft of electricity cables we mentioned at the last subcouncil meeting, we are seeing a spike in thefts of water meters. There were 3 341 incidents reported between 1 July 2021 and 30 April 2022. That is an increase of 1 143 from the same period of the previous year. A reward of R5 000 is being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to a successful arrest. Please report this via our emergency call centre on 021 480 7700 or call 112 for free, and ask for City of Cape Town’s Public Emergency Call Centre.
. Winter is coming up and we ask that all residents report any incidents in which stormwater is being channelled into our sewer system. There are many incidents where residents channel rainwater from their gutters and roofs into the sewer systems, among other illegal cross-connections.
Rainwater must always be directed to stormwater drains.
Many residents may not be aware that these connections are illegal, and so the City will be assisting by doing door to door visits and using smoke to detect any possible illegal connections. If there are illegal connections found, residents will be given a notice to correct the connections within three months. The immense amount of stormwater that is channelled into our sewer systems causes overflows. Please also remember to throw unwanted items into the bin and not down drains.
We find the most incredible items in some of our blocked sewer lines. These not only damage the pipes and the pump stations but also cause overflows.
