Atlantis Tech Hub and SA School Coding have partnered to implement a pilot project to help the local community get closer to the digital age and be best prepared with technology skills ahead of the fourth industrial revolution.

This was made possible when Peter Stoffberg, founder of the Atlantis Tech Hub, approached Grosvenor Primary school to be part of a pilot project.

Stoffberg explained, at an unrelated event at Cape Business Chamber, he had met with Mervin Moodley, Atlantis Foundries’ Chief Financial Officer, who agreed to sponsor 600 learners in 2020.

The project will start on 1 March and a young teacher, Chanique Hesselman, and principal Terence Adams will drive the project from classroom level, to ensure its success and impact on learners. The school is equipped with 20 working computers to start the project.

Adams, who is very excited about the project, said the project will create opportunities for the community, especially the technological skills to prepare and empower our future workforce.

“The career path and income opportunities for coding are sought after and abundant and parents are encouraged to guide learners into this career choice for the future,” he said.

“Our unemployment rate is over 35% among the youth, and teaching coding will help close the skills gap, especially among disadvantaged communities such as Atlantis.”

Stoffberg added: “These digital and coding skills will create a skills base in Atlantis that will lead to innovation and development of the tech industry, and will also be beneficial within the renewable energy sectors over the next 10 years.”
