June is National Blood Donor Month, and to mark it the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) will endeavour to raise awareness of the importance of blood donations and celebrate the remarkable privilege of being able to save lives by doing so throughout the month.

The theme for this year, “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”, highlights the need for regular, unpaid blood donations all year round to maintain adequate blood supplies.

The WCBS so far hosted numerous exciting events for the month, starting with blood-group exhibitions at various malls over the first three Saturdays of the month.

Ending the month on a high note by hosting its “1 day-10 malls – 1 000 units of blood” campaign again. This event took place on Saturday 25 June at 10 participating malls across the Western Cape. Their aim was to collect 1 000 units of blood to help secure a sufficient blood supply.

Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager of WCBS, said the service would like to encourage all eligible and potential blood donors to stand together.

“Celebrate National Blood Donor month and save up to three lives with one donation,” she added.

If you are between age 16 and 75, weigh 50 kg or more, are in good general health and have a safe sexual lifestyle you should be able to donate. To find your closest blood donation clinic, download the WCBS app, WhatsApp 060 549 7244 or visit www.wcbs.org.za for more info.
