City of Cape Town Arts and Culture hosted a Heritage Awareness Programme at Mamre Community Hall.

The event, held between 3-5 May, was followed by an educational tour on the 6th with 30 individuals from Local Community Heritage Groups.

Allister Lightburn, local ward councillor, said the programme is aimed at community-based heritage groups, individuals and interested parties, mainly youth aged 16-35 years.

He added the focus of the programme is the building of a knowledge base and understanding of local cultural heritage in building social cohesion.

Lightburn added the programme is helping to raise awareness among the youth about heritage conservation and the management of heritage resources, and experience this through excursions.

He said that this project will promote local history and culture at a community level, told through the eyes and perspectives of local community heritage resources.
