Local boxing organiser, manager and trainer William Andreas, a resident of Witsand, hosted a very successful local amateur boxing tournament in the Witsand Community Hall on 30 April. Clubs from Phillipi, Nyanga, Makhaza, Khayelitsha and Kraaifontein took part in it.

Andreas said the objective of the event was to bring boxing as a sport to Witsand and gradually expand it to the broader Atlantis.

“Our plan is to host at least two tournaments each year here in Atlantis,” he said.

“We are definitely planning to host another tournament in August or September, when we bring the sport back to the people with many more exciting activities.

“With the lack of a proper training facility, not having our own boxing ring the sport became quite costly due to hiring these facilities.

“Boxing is about creating opportunities for these young ones, and we will do everything possible to make this dream come true.”

The club does not charge any fees as many parents face unemployment and other challenges, Andreas pointed out.

Everyone wins, taking gold or silver, all awards sponsored by the Sports and Recreation department, received through Councillor Moosa Raise.

Any organisation wishing to sponsor a boxing ring, head gear and boxing gloves to take boxing in Atlantis to the next level can contact Andreas on 067 267 0806.
