The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town’s VC Cares (student volunteer body) celebrated Mandela Month through a “Jars of Hope” initiative, which it ran from 1 to 18 July.
In it, students and staff were encouraged to make groups of four jars of food for R67 or donate a R67 digital grocery voucher — in memory of the late former President’s 67 years of service to humanity.
More than 334 “Jars of Hope” were made, with enough food to feed roughly 1 300 people. These were donated to the campus’ adopted school, Atlantis High, where was a need for food among learners during the Covid-19 lockdown. The school will now be able to feed learners on the school’s feeding scheme.
Melanie Adonis, Acting Principal, said: “We are very thankful for the donation made by The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town, for it has made a very difficult situation more bearable. Dylan Ferreira, technology and mathematics teacher for Grade 8 and 9, assists in the school’s kitchen with sourcing, cooking, preparing and delivering food parcels to learners and their families during lockdown.”
Megan Landman, Head of Student Services at the college, said: “Remembering we form part of a community is important for our staff and students, and what better way to show we care than through fostering hope. Nothing warms you more than a cup of soup on a cold winter’s day! I hope that the learners are warmed up inside and out.”
