Doctors said he wouldn’t live longer than a week or he wouldn’t be able to speak, but Mcxzavier Lewis, who turns 9 in August, has proven all the naysayers wrong.

“Mcxzavier was born with spina bifida (open spine) and has had numerous operations on his spine, head, shunt and foot,” Dad Fabian points out.

Lewis says the fact that his son attends a normal school (Grade 2) even though he can’t walk and makes use of a wheelchair has shown what is possible for children like Mcxzavier.

Lewis said over the years his family saw how families from different communities attended Red Cross Memorial Children’s Hospital with different medical conditions.

“Red Cross does really special work; that’s why on Saturday 3 July Mcxzavier will be wheeling for friends to raise funds for the hospital,” says his proud dad.

“He will do a 5 km race in his wheelchair starting at USave in Protea Park down Kerria Avenue, up Charl Uys Drive passed OK Foods to KFC, passed Robinvale High School and ending at Rebecca van Amsterdam hall.” The family pleads with organisations and community members to support Mcxzavier financially by donating to this good cause. The event will be live-streamed on Facebook, and for more info contact Lewis on 084 847 2189.
