Atlantis police are experiencing an increase in online fraud cases since August 2021.
This according to Captain Lisa Munro, local spokesperson. She said scams are becoming more sophisticated and many people fall victim to them.
“This can be very upsetting, but don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed,” Munro appealed to the community. “You have been the victim of a crime, and it’s important to report it at the closest police station.”
She added people should learn from their mistakes and listen to warnings from family and friends.
“In the same breath we encourage people not to do payments in an account without seeing or having the item. Also, they must ensure that the account is liable. Scammers are using fake accounts,” Munro said.
People are buying cars, TVs, wigs, jewellery, and so on, online, make payments and never receive the item. More and more people prefer buying things online over the conventional method of going into stores, because it is convenient, the prices are better and it is easier to send gifts.
The disadvantage is falling prey to online fraud.
Cases at Atlantis police show many losing money, never getting it back, a cautionary note for purchasing online.
