The milling of sections of the asphalt in Avondale commenced on Tuesday 27 February, and the contractor is hoping to complete all asphalt work by 15 March 2024, weather-permitting.

Sufficient provision is made for effective traffic accommodation during all construction activities.

We trust that the residents’ understanding and patience with this temporary inconvenience will be forthcoming, and that they’ll enjoy newly resurfaced roads shortly.

City’s free upskilling workshops

The Business Hub, overseen by the Economic Growth Directorate, will as part of its development initiatives host workshops covering a range of business-development-and-sustainability topics, such as how to complete a tender document, costing and pricing as well as how to do business with the City. Many of the sessions will be hosted online so residents will be able to access them from anywhere. The team will also be available to answer questions on, among other things, how to deal with “red tape” in sourcing finance.. To sign up for workshops, go to https://www.investcapetown.com/news-events/business-events/. For data-free access to the virtual sessions those attending can use the SmartCape services in public libraries or go to one of the 100 City-run buildings in the metro with free Wi-Fi access. Subsidies for Micro-Developers in Low Income Areas

The Development Charges Fund, to support micro-developers building affordable housing in lower-income communities, was adopted by Mayco on 6 February 2024.

The City wishes to support and encourage the development of affordable rental accommodation in informal areas by targeting micro-developers who build rental units at a smaller scale; this could be any entrepreneur building six to 12 rental units on an erf.

An initial R20 million has been budged to subsidise qualifying micro-developers on a first-come-first-served basis. These subsidies will be available to stimulate development of affordable housing in 194 targeted areas, including Saxonsea.

Ninety percent of development charges will be covered by the subsidy generally used by the City to pay for bulk services to support development, such as stormwater, water and sewage.

Once the Development Charges Fund has been approved by council more information will be made available.
