Residents in Atlantis are encouraged to report any information related to incidents of extortion threats directed at waste collection services in the area, should they occur.

While the waste collections service in the area is currently operating as normal, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate strongly condemns threats of extortion that aim to hinder waste collection services in Atlantis.

“This is a proactive call to Atlantis residents to join hands with the City to help protect our very important waste collection service in the area.

“It has come to my attention that there have been incidents where opportunists have gone to solid waste refuse collection staff to threaten them, and also threatened our contractor, demanding protection money. Such behaviour cannot be tolerated and we need the community’s help to report any information they might have about such incidents. We cannot allow criminality to hinder service delivery to our residents.

“The City continues to monitor the waste collection service in the area and engages with security agencies, should support be needed,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.”

Anti-Extortion Campaign

In October 2023, the City launched a city-wide Anti-Extortion Campaign under the slogan “Enough is Enough! Genoeg is Genoeg! Kwanele!” including the establishment of a 24/7 anti-extortion hotline with dedicated City resources to investigate and collate extortion information to properly trigger Saps investigations.

The campaign complemented the work already being done in the space where City investigators work collaboratively with Saps anti-extortion unit to ensure swift action is taken when threats are received.
