  • Damian Munro, an Atlantis resident, became a biokineticist after earning a BA in sports, recreation, and exercise, followed by an honours degree in biokinetics at the University of the Western Cape.
  • During his time at UWC, he served as a biokineticist for the UWC Rugby Young Guns and gained extensive experience in treating various conditions through individualized exercise programs.
  • Munro has now opened a practice in Atlantis to educate and assist the community, with a commitment to improving their overall health and quality of life.

To qualify as a biokineticist Atlantis resident Damian Munro obtained a BA degree in sports, recreation and exercise and then on to an honours degree in biokinetics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where he served an internship too.

“My journey started in 2015, when I enrolled in a two-year sport-fitness course at North Link College,” he said.

Munro then enrolled at UWC, where he got his BA in 2020 before qualifying as a biokineticist a year later. He said during his time at UWC he was also the biokineticist for the UWC Rugby Young Guns.

“I was always interested in the field of medicine and keen to help others. Biokinetics is a profession which uses exercise as a treatment modality. Bio(life) kinetics (movement), so basically using scientifically individualised exercise programmes.”

Munro explained services are provided for those who have suffered orthopaedic injuries, muscle or ligament strains/sprains, broken bones, chronic disease management like hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, obesity and so on, pre/post surgery rehabilitation, sport strength and conditioning, general fitness and well-being, neurological conditions and wheelchair bound individuals.

He said a biokineticist develops a thorough understanding of the individual holistically and assists in the process of helping themselves to enhance their quality of life.

“With a life motto ‘do to others what you would have them do to you’, I opened the practice in Atlantis as there is none here in the same profession and aiming to educate the community about biokinetics.”

Munro also dreams to hopefully be able to assist where possible and give back to the community of Atlantis.
