Residents from Covid informal settlement in Witsand took their anger about basic services to the street last week. Leaders from the community said in a letter to the ward Councillor Moosa Raise they are tired of waiting for basic services.
Residents said they were “growing increasingly concerned about what will happen next week.”
The community also asked the ward councillor to meet with them in person as they don’t get any feedback on emails. The leadership of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in Witsand said “as community leaders we have exhausted all avenues of discussion, and our community is tired of waiting.
“We feel that our cries for help have fallen on deaf ears, and we are not being taken seriously.”
SANCO said at this point it did not want any further “unpacking” meetings and demanded tangible service delivery as with any other area the ward councillor prioritises, deserving the same basic services as any other community in the ward.
Raise said the land is private property and the City therefore cannot just deliver services there.
