We review a selection of children’s books for all ages

From toddlers to tweens, here is a selection of new releases for children:

The Rhyming Bible
The Rhyming Bible.

Book: My Rhyming Bible

Authors: Ashley Matthews, Courteney Emmerson-Hicks, Janice Emmerson-Hicks

Writing engaging rhymes is not as simple as it sounds. Writing simple, engaging rhymes for toddlers is even harder.

That’s why both my five-year-old daughter and I were very taken with this book, but for different reasons.

My daughter liked that the stories were easy to remember in rhyme and requested repeated readings. I liked the artistry of the simple poetry.

This book is a win-win for everyone.

Also available in Afrikaans.

Pooems
Pooems: A book of pooey poetry.

Book: Pooems: A book of pooey poetry

Author: Kes Gray

More rhymes, but this time it’s about poop.

My kids loved this book; it elicited a few giggles, but since poopy stories are on trend now, they quickly moved on to others on the shelf. This stinky imprint certainly had a unique take on the trend.

Books: Thando goes to Sea; Thando and the Magic Window

Author: Thandi Xaba

In these adventure picture books, Thando goes on multiple adventures, only one of them real — when he goes off to sea. In that book, Thando goes scuba diving with his mom and learns about sea creatures.

In Thando and the Magic Window, his imagination is the adventure. As he gazes out of his bedroom window, he imagines himself going on a rocket, an aeroplane, to the jungle, underwater and other places, some more real than others.

The Worst Holiday Ever
Disaster Diaries: The Worst Holiday Ever.

Book: Disaster Diaries: The Worst Holiday Ever

Author: Joanna Nadin

This book is part of a series, which mostly features disasters in “The Worst Class In The World”. This time, Daffodil and her best friend Nirmal go on a family holiday that features several over-the-top disasters.

5-minute Marvel Super Stories

Book: 5-minute Marvel Super Stories

Various authors and artists

Comic-book and graphic-novel lovers will enjoy this collection of 15 bite-sized comic books packaged together into a hardcover. It includes stories about some of Marvel’s best-known heroes and a few of the more obscure ones, such as Squirrel Girl and Namor.

While most of the art was the classic moody and edgy comic-book variety, some were more simplistic.

This book was one of those that disappeared into my children’s bedrooms as soon as it arrived and continues to travel between them.

A little bit of everything, this book would make a good gift for tweens and young teens.
