Golden Jubilee: Lutherans across the Western Cape unite to mark 50 years of ministry

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa’s (ELCSA) Western Cape Circuit will mark its 50th anniversary next month with a three-day programme that combines celebration, reflection and discussion on some of the province’s most pressing social challenges.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations, taking place from 17 to 19 July, will bring together Lutherans from across the Western Cape under the theme, “One Spirit, One Circuit, One Celebration.”

While the anniversary will commemorate five decades of ministry in the region, organisers say the programme is also intended to examine the church’s role in contemporary society.

The celebrations open on Friday, 17 July, with a public discussion at the Grassy Park Congregation focusing on gangsterism and poverty on the Cape Flats. Religious leaders, community representatives and faith-based organisations will discuss how churches can respond to ongoing social challenges affecting communities across the province.

On Saturday, 18 July, the celebrations move to the Parow Civic Centre for a day of worship, music, storytelling and reflection. Guests can look forward to performances by the Moravian Brass Band, praise and worship teams, a mass choir and special musical guests.

To honour service

The programme will also honour pastors who have faithfully served the church over many decades, while reflecting on the journey of the Western Cape Circuit since its establishment. The programme will also include a keynote address by Bishop Nkosinathi Myaka. Food stalls, refreshments and sweet treats will be available throughout the day, while the young ones will also be entertained with activities.

The Jubilee weekend concludes with a thanksgiving service at the Athlone Congregation on Sunday, 19 July. Congregations from across the circuit are expected to participate in the service, which will celebrate the church’s heritage and its contribution to communities across the Western Cape.

Pastor Cynthia Davids invites all. “What a joy to celebrate this Jubilee with our Evangelical Lutheran Church! We are looking forward to this special weekend to remember where we came from and to thank God for carrying us this far. But this is also a new beginning. Let us go forward with joy, serving God and loving each other.”

Organisers say the anniversary provides an opportunity not only to look back on the church’s history, but also to consider its future role in serving communities and addressing social challenges.
